Major Arcana
The Tower: tarot card meaning
Sudden change, the collapse of illusions and release.
Yes or no: No
Upright position
Lightning strikes the tower, and everything shaky falls. The card is about unexpected upheaval after which the truth becomes clear. It can be painful, but it clears space for something real.
More about the card
The Tower may look like the most dramatic card in the deck, but its essence is release. Lightning destroys what was built on a false foundation: illusions, lies, a habit of putting up with things. Such events are rarely pleasant, yet afterward it becomes clear what really matters. The card often describes sudden news, a breakup, losing a job or an insight that changes your view of everything. The important thing is not to rebuild the old but to build more honestly.
Reversed position
The reversed Tower speaks of a crisis that was avoided, or of changes you are resisting. Sometimes it is better to let the old fall.
Symbolism of the card
Lightning knocks the crown off a tower on a rock, fire blazes from the windows, and two people fall down. The crown means false authority or belief, and the lightning a sudden insight that brings down whatever rested on illusions.
In love and relationships
A blunt clearing of the air in the relationship, an open talk about things left unsaid. After the storm it may become clear where you stand.
At work and in finances
Sudden changes in the company, plans being revised. Look for an opportunity in the chaos.
Reversed in love
A crisis people try not to notice, or a fear of change that makes tension grow. An outburst can be postponed, but the tension does not go away on its own. The card advises talking before the tension grows further.
As a feeling
Shock, confusion. The card speaks of feelings that can change sharply or burst out unexpectedly.
The card as a person
A person who changes everything around them, an event in themselves. They are sharp and direct, may speak unpleasant truths and shatter other people’s illusions. Sometimes such a person helps you out of a rut.
As the card of the day
The day may bring a surprise. Don’t panic: if something breaks, it was probably resting on something weak. Keep a backup plan, check important matters and be ready to change course quickly.
Yes or no
No. The plan in its current form is unlikely to hold, but that can free up space for something better.

Questions to ask yourself
When this card comes up, it helps to answer honestly:

- Which truth have I long felt but not admitted?
- What do I want to build in place of what has fallen?
The card’s advice
Don’t rebuild what rested on illusions.
