Major Arcana
Death: tarot card meaning
The end of a stage, transformation and room for something new.
Yes or no: No
Upright position
In tarot, Death does not mean physical death. It is a card of endings: something runs its course to make room for the new. Change is part of life, and resisting it often makes it harder.
More about the card
A rider in black armor rides a white horse, carrying a flag with a white rose, and the sun shines behind him. Despite its stern name, the card’s theme is completion and transformation: a stage, a habit, a relationship or a role ends so that something else can begin. Death asks you not to cling to what has already passed, because letting go is what gives the strength to move on.
Reversed position
Reversed Death points to fear of change, a drawn-out goodbye or stagnation. You may be holding on to something that has already run its course.
Symbolism of the card
A black-armored skeleton, a white horse, a white rose on the flag and the sun shining behind the rider. The rose means immortality and rebirth, the sun a new day after the old one ends.
In love and relationships
The end of an old form of the relationship. Sometimes a parting, sometimes a deep renewal of the couple.
At work and in finances
A job ending, a project closing, a change of profession. Sometimes one door closes to leave room for others.
Reversed in love
An unwillingness to let go of a relationship that has already ended, or a fear of change that freezes everything. The card advises admitting honestly what has run its course and allowing yourself a new stage.
As a feeling
Inner change. The card speaks of feelings that are transforming: the old goes away and it is not yet known what the new will be.
The card as a person
A strong, deep person who has been through serious change and is not afraid of it. They know how to bring things to a close, dislike half-measures and can be a catalyst for change in others.
As the card of the day
A good day to finish what drags on: clear out the extra, close old issues, say goodbye to a habit. Don’t fear the end: behind it a new sun is already visible.
Yes or no
Not in the old form. What you are asking about may need to end for something new to appear.
